The gaming community has recently become the target of media and government outlets, who have made unfair and unintelligible claims that violence in video games is causing mental illness.
Let’s be clear: This is not right, and it requires a response. We want to stand up against these claims and support our beloved gaming community.
The truth is this: mental illness affects people in all walks of life. Mental illness does not discriminate against race, color, gender, or religion. In fact, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. — that’s 43.8 million people or 18.5% of the nation’s population — experiences mental illness in a given year.
#SaveTheSquad is a new charitable organization founded by members in the gaming community that have been afflicted by mental illnesses. There are many challenges in the mental health space that need to be addressed, and these founders have made it their mission to tackle the stigma that shrouds mental illnesses.
